Orinda Homes and Real Estate

Orinda is a very affluent town of about 20,000 people situated just to the east of Oakland and to the west of Walnut Creek. It’s rural location and somewhat rustic landscape have attracted high end home buyers who commute to downtown Oakland, San Francisco and Walnut Creek to work.

Early history of Orinda was mostly a farming an ranching community but with the opening of the Caldecott Tunnel in 1937 the area became attractive to wealthy business men who established their home in the Orinda area.

Today, Orinda is considered in the top 30 of the wealthiest cities with populations over 10,000 people. It has a vibrant downtown anchored by the Orinda Theater with has been home to various film festivals including the California Independent Film Festival held there in 2010.

Homes in Orinda are mostly scattered around the hills surrounding the downtown area. They often have large lots and the starting price for an entry level single family home is around $600,000 as of March 2011.

The population of Orinda is mostly White 86%, Asian 9+% and Hispanic 3+% with average family incomes of nearly $200,000 a year.
