Blackhawk is a master planned community in the unincorporated area of Contra Costa County just east of Danville. Homes in Blackhawk are some of the nicest in the East Bay Area. Several athletes from local sports teams and other local celebrities have chosen the Blackhawk area to purchase their home. Much of Blackhawk is a gated area with 24 hour security.
Blackhawk as a development dates back to 1975 when Florida developer Ken Behring bought the land and laid out plans for the housing development. After challenges from environmentalists and other concerned citizens, the plans were scaled back from the original 4800 homes planned to 2400. The first 200 homes in the Hidden Oaks area were completed in 1978. All this came from the original Blackhawk Ranch which was established in 1917 by Ansel Mills Easton and his son-in-law William Q. Ward. Blackhawk was named after a famous Irish racehorse named Blackhawk that Easton’s family had once owned.
Today the community is a well established upscale area with custom homes up to 6000 sq ft and more. Blackhawk Plaza is an upscale shopping center just outside the gated community with one of the areas best grocery stores, Draggers, as well as art galleries, clothing boutiques, restaurants and more.
Blackhawk is one of the finest communities in the entire Bay Area and though the costs are high to live there, the security, beautiful landscaped homes, weather and shopping make it one of the best places to live.
